don't need to lean in to some sort of insincere brevity in this corner of the world wide web unlike maybe my instagram presence so going to jot down some #notes on my TTT dj set from friday (I know it's not that deep but sometimes it feels that deep)
- initially was thinking about doing some sort of DJ marcelle tribute act and only bringing records. hearing her play the fall last time she was at healthy was such a good moment and especially stood out to me the next time i was in that same club and someone was doing some really perfect dubsteppy mixing that i couldnt really get into so much (no offence nameless dj). i felt like if i brought records that the mixing would naturally be sloppier and the selections weirder - which was a bit daunting but would have been good. anyway i was already lugging my whole live set down and the UDG bag life made no sense so the 10 gram usb won out
- playlists i had made were "noisy dance" "noisy low tempo" "han" "sexy" "cool boys" "beatless freak zone".
noisy dance
fairly obvious; rezzet adjacent stuff, girl band remixes, scuzzy techno
noisy low tempo
maybe more like industrial sludgy stuff for some 90-110bpm respite
han
stuff that i like to think of me playing - weird freestyle tracks, some memphis rap, hardcore punk, baile funk. i've started to include this kind of playlist if i'm doing a club set to make sure i dont go for easy options
sexy
italo discoey new beaty electro-y stuff. that like 120 vibe that feels really good to dance too
cool boys
my bitching out playlist. if i looked out across the club and saw loads of cool TTT boys and needed to play a leftfield techno set - all stuff that i like but stuff that wouldnt live on a han playlist
beatless freak zone
weird noise shit for transitioning - i like to lose people in order to bring them back. it's fun to feel the energy drop and then bring a kickdrum back in
- i was trying to think of a way to make sure i stayed out of the cool boys playlist and remembered reading jon k's "3 and move" post on insta relatively recently (ie play three tracks of a similar genre/mood and then cut to something else). usually in a club set i do a clubby vibe into a sludgy vibe and into a clubby vibe again (used to title these playlists things like "take them to the sludge zone") but thought i'd try this so that i could play three punk tracks in a row rather than bring one in as a gimmick. the "3s" i moved through were: noisy techno, italo/electro, baile funk, hardcore punk, latin freestyle/gqom, leftfield uk funky/techno, memphis rap/industrial, then 108 sort of reggaeton clubby stuff, before closing out with my sunareht meme (playing 117 at faster and then slower tempos) and then yes by edinburgh leisure. having three CDJs was really nice for this too, i would line them up on 1&2&3 and feel easy about the upcoming 10 minutes and with an idea of the genre/mood i wanted to go with afterwards.
- which felt really good considering the last time i DJed in manchester i was so fucked that it was maybe the worst and most anxiously i've ever DJed and i was terrified about every transition. this time im off bevy for lent and just ate apples in the booth which added to the silly time
- anyway seems kind of embarrassing to dissect this so much but i havent played a club set that fun for a while and it was nice to abandon the slick in favour of the raucous. kids were singing along to KUTE, some of the bar staff told me they really enjoyed it (most important audience members imho), and there might be plans to release it on cassette :)

extremely tinfoil hat of me but really feel like the CS open fund closing is to use individuals to put pressure on the gov to reinstate it? doing the negotiating work that CS couldn't? regardless i seem to just want to pass around the same DIY 50 quid all the time. paid someone to help me write the bulk of an application recently(ish) but it felt like too much of a riddy to actually apply (wanted to go to wales to make noise music about medical leeches). go figure. wild to see people posting that they got 10k etc to make an album. will probably need to lean into funding avenues more rather than kid myself on that doing two bar gigs every weekend constitutes creativity enough for it to make up such a big proportion of my freelance income. also means i keep missing out on gigs i should really be at (if i claim to be a ~supporter of the scene~).

the little snide NGS "sorry but our betterment of society needs to be funded" post reanimates my commitment to the DIY. my whole relationship to "art" or the ways in which i try to carry it out fully lean into that idea that it's not economically productive. doing weird useless shit with my spare time and energy feels so disconnected from this idea of having to leverage art to be useful and only being able to achieve that by accepting money from people who've made that money by investing in the killing of palestinians.
yeah i'm not some national platform i just make bad music, but these gaffs thinking they're the only ones who can facilitate artistic conversation makes me desperate for some kind of UBI under which freak DIY folk community art shit could thrive.
i had sort of wanted to do a review of GI on here but the idea is fizzling beyond that note on community art*. the sandra george exhibition made me cry a number of times. at the footnotes on the closures of the centres for the blind she had photographed, her love for her son, (and maybe i have this wrong?) but also the fact that this was her first exhibition and also a posthumous one. space and credit for community art workers when you're dead. that's a little reactive of me but (as seamus and i spoke about in the studio a couple of days beforehand) community art is approached as something less cool than an obtuse found object exhibition where the invigilator tells you that the artist didnt want them to share anything about the work. okay cheers pal.
*although sitting in that radio car made me feel a sort of bizarre regretful nostalgia and cindy islam at listen gallery was extremely touching
